Hydraulics/Scour Analysis for Bridges Over Tidally Influenced Channel

Client: TY Lin International

TY Lin International retained WRE to conduct a hydrologic/hydraulic analysis of the existing Embarcadero Bridge and a replacement bridge structure along the Lake Merritt Channel in Oakland, California. This work was part of the Lake Merritt Channel Green Belt Project.

The Lake Merritt Channel connects Lake Merritt, an important recreational facility in downtown Oakland, to San Francisco Bay, a tidal estuary.  WRE engineers developed a computer model of the waterway to investigate the effects of different bridge configurations.

The study generated recommendations for bridge design parameters and scour protection for piers and embankments.
